We swallow greedily any lie that flatters us, but we sip only little by little at a truth we find bitter. -Denis Diderot
==============================================
Armok, Corinne, and Garrett sat around their campfire in the Tennesee mountains, exhausted after a long day. Their captive was huddled, miserable, in the rain while they sat in their cave. He was tied to a tree by railroad ties Armok had bent, barehanded, around him. Corinne was falling asleep, and as she did so Garrett disentangled himself from her and gestured at Armok. The two walked towards the entrance to the cave, looking at their captive.
"You have a soldier's training, and this is good. Very good," Armok said, "But do you have what it takes to raise an army from people that don't? Knowing that most of them will probably die?"
Garrett looked at Armok long and hard, then nodded. He did have what it took. Even if he was only a Corporal, that was something. He was on his week-long leave when disaster struck. He had probably been called to active duty, but his friends and family were more important than trying to follow orders from a military that had been successfully cut into about a dozen different command units. He sighed.
"We-" Garrett paused, as their captive sniffed the air and snarled viciously. He looked at Armok... who was already wrapped in the shadows of dusk. He slipped into the rain, and Garrett watched in awe as the rain slid off the shadows like it was glass.
Shots rang out in the forest, and demonic roars filled the evening air. The guns sounded strange, more powerful than anything Garrett knew of in the United States Armed Forces. Garrett pulled out the dagger and an axe, stalking around the demon to face whatever was headed their way. Armok gestured from a sheathe of shadow, and he paused.
Somewhere close, a shot rang out. Mud was thrown from the ground a foot in front of Garrett and he dropped his axe, crouching low to the ground. A warning shot.
"If you are human, and you aren't an enemy, drop your weapons sir, and step away from that demon." Said a soldier, in a strange uniform. His armor glistened in the rain as the fire reflected off his armor.
Behind Garrett, Corinne clicked the safety off of her borrowed pistol. She pointed it at the soldier's head. The soldier turned and fired off two shots faster than Garrett could lunge at him, and with a roar Garrett slammed a fist into the man's chest hard enough to make him throw up. He picked the soldier up and threw him into a tree forcefully, knocking the poor man out. He turned... and saw Armok standing with two dents in his breastplate. The shadows around them growled menacingly... then dissipated.
Four more soldiers stepped into the clearing, guns raised... and then lowered them immediately, saluting Armok with respect. They eyed Garrett grudgingly as the soldier staggered to his feet, bruised and battered. Garrett breathed hard and heavy.
"Alpha Squad, this is Garrett Roberts, of the USMC," Said a bemused Armok, eying the sore soldier with a smirk, "As you can see, he can fend for himself."
The soldiers chuckled and patted Garrett on the shoulder as they walked past, to get in the cave and share their rations and supplies. Corinne watched, blinking, lowering her gun. Armok chuckled and walked over to the demon that was gibbering and snarling, and punched it hard enough in the face that it blacked out again.
"Well, it's good to see a friendly-Fucking Christ, what was that?" Garrett said, referring to a crimson flash a few miles north of them in the mountains.
Armok turned and looked... and grinned wickedly. He gestured for everyone to follow him, and ripped the railroad ties off of the tree, slinging the demon over his shoulder.
"That, gentlemen, was the Lady Rose, and if I know her... that red flash means she's giving someone, or someones, hell." Armok said, Reaver's eye opening and looking around ravenously.
==============================================
Rose pointed, and crimson energy blasted apart another cambion, as Katey chunked throwing knives. One demon fell, a blade in it's eye. Yet another fell, a ragged hole blown through it's chest. Rose's weapons dripped demonic ichor, and yet still more demons were coming. She could sense Shadow Clan in the area, and a strange darkness was headed her way.
She smiled, as both her and Katey began to breathe heavier and their muscles grew weary. A night unlike any these mountains had ever seen was about to fall like the fury of a god upon these lands, and come dawn... the only living things in these woods would be friend of the Shadow Clan. Darkness was falling... her Darkness.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win. -Sun Tzu
==============================================
Katie's entire body ached. It felt like her shoulders were about to break off of the rest of her body, and her legs felt like the knees were just going to snap. She groggily opened her eyes, and wished she never had. She was in a tent, surrounded by dead or dying members of her family impaled on meat-hooks and left to rot. Tears flowed freely, and the hate in her grew hotter than the sun.
"Hello darling." Said a man in a labcoat, with a clipboard to boot. He adjusted his glasses. "I'm sorry for the ... well, rather poor conditions that we are meeting, but you are simply a tool, and your family was not a part of the plan."
Katie shrieked many unkind things, and lashed about wildly. She tried to free her arms, and managed only to dislocate one of her elbows. She was dangling about four inches off the ground with weights on her ankles, her hands high above her head wrapped in chains that were attached to the support beams overhead. She half whimpered, half snarled before settling down, hatred beaming from her eyes.
"Yes. Well." The man said, amused, "The Lord told me you would do something like that, something stupid. He also told me not to touch anything you hurt. So, enjoy your pain. Yes, yes."
The man checked his clipboard for a moment, making a few notes here and there, before speaking once more.
"As you can see around you, most of your family is dead or dying-" The man was interrupted.
"Katie, baby, focus on me! We're going to-" Her mother's ragged voice ended in a gurgle... as the man in the labcoat slit her throat. He looked annoyed, before finishing his sentence.
"Dead or dying. Now, I think, I will help with the dying process. After we talk, of course."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Armok cut a glabrezu in half, but the creature didn't even scream. Reaver had drained both blood and soul, so the withered corpse just hit the ground with a thud. He almost laughed as he spun to face another attacker. Around him, the Shadow Clan soldiers he had rallied, and more headed towards Rose's position, were opening fire on the demons doing the same thing. All sorts of creatures were headed to the crimson energy, knowing exactly who she was... hating her, for every one of their kind she had destroyed.
"Armok, I'm taking a few of your men to flank them, alright?" Garrett yelled, breaking a smaller demon's arm before sticking a combat knife in the creature's throat.
"Go. I will meet you in battle. Rally your men to her, and do not let her be killed."
Garrett led six of the Shadow Clan soldiers with him off into the woods, away from the main combat. Corinne was back at the cave with a force of nearly thirty men, waiting to protect both her and any wounded that straggled in. He felt a lot better knowing she was protected regardless of by who. His thoughts were interrupted by a gutteral growl so close they could feel the vibration.
Ahead of them, eying them ferally, was a huge pit-fiend. The creature wasn't like the rest, it had four arms and wore armor... and instead of massive girth, it has massive muscle. Twelve feet tall, it was an awe-inspiring, spine-breaking sight. Garrett sighed, and closed his eyes. This is it...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Armok had fought his way to the bloodbath. A dozen desperate soldiers had rallied around Rose and a young woman, and around them were scores of demons yipping and howling for blood. One large creature, rushing Rose from behind, leapt, and bared it's fangs mid-air... only to be blown aside, screaming in agony as a molten orb of shadowfyre blew it in half, freezing the area around the torn flesh completely. Armok roared, and ran into the fray.
The soldiers Armok had gathered followed him, about twenty or so men. Rifles flared, and metal clashed against metal. The battle for the mountains was on. A huge pitfiend stomped into the battle, kicking a Shadow Clan soldier at least half a dozen yards away from the fight with a sickening crack. Armok turned mid-charge and ran for the creature, shadowfyre dancing on Reaver's blade.
--- --- --- --- ---
Rose watched Armok charge into the fight with a smile. A bubble of crimson energy wrapped around Katey and Rose almost laughed as she flailed in the bubble. She then turned back to the fight and gathered crimson energy in her fists. Every time she pointed, a demon died. Sometimes, a quick sheet of energy would save a soldier from a deathblow, but usually the sheet would just cut through a demon and leave it writhing in pieces. She turned yet again to help Armok with the pit-fiend, when she heard a strange voice with her empathy. It sounded a lot like Armok, just not quite as grizzled.
This is it...
Rose closed her eyes and got a sense of where the thought originated. She fanned her shushuken and gestured for two soldiers to follow her. They saluted and one pulled a knife out of a demon's skull, then both ran after her. She glided around trees, running as fast as she could towards the thoughts of the person that had resigned himself to death.
As she came around a particularly thick cluster of trees, she skidded to a halt. About ten yards in front of her, a Shadow Clan corpse, mangled beyond recognition, had been used to break a tree at least a meter in diameter. Or perhaps it was two soldiers, it was too hard to tell. A third soldier was impaled by a knife the size of Rose's leg to a tree, and he wasn't squirming anymore. A fourth and fifth soldier were gasping for air and failing miserably with nearly every rib in their body broken. Something terrible had happened here, and two people were missing.
"Ma'am, permission to finish the wounded?" Asked one grizzled soldier, the one whose knife had been pulled from a demon's skull.
"Granted, soldier. You two check the perimeter, I am going to find whatever did this."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few minutes away from where Rose was, Garrett panted for breath next to a Shadow Clan soldier. They were trying to lead the huge pit fiend back to the cave, where superior numbers and fire-power would hopefully reduce it to a sticky mess of gore and ichor. However, after watching it demolish five other soldiers in less than a minute, Garrett wasn't so sure. He sighed, and looked at the soldier beside him, a kid younger than him.
"Get to the cave. I will hold it off." Garrett said, taking the kid's rifle. He stood up, and checked the safety off. He leaned around the tree and fired a three-round burst, and the pit fiend roared.
The creature snarled angrily, looking down at Garrett with a ravenous hunger. One of it's eyes was destroyed by the high-caliber rifle, but it had four. And now, it was angry. Hellfire danced over the creature's four knuckles, and it sheathed the massive weapons it had. This one, this little human, was going to die by hand.

Do not ask which creature screams in the night, do not question who waits for you in the shadow. It is my cry that wakes you in the night, and my body that crouches in the shadow. I am Tzeench and you are the puppet That dances to my tune. -Karanzantor the Vile, The Traitor of Xian ============================================== Assassin's blade slid between the creature's shoulderblades, and the demon dropped instantly, dead before it hit the ground. He kept running, gracefully gliding around cacti as he killed the sentries. About a hundred yards behind him were Corie and Hawk, with about sixty Shadow Clan soldiers. Kyle had come with him to scout, and with a loud crunch Kyle's metal rod had splintered a demon's neck or skull. The scouts were dead, and now all that was left to do was to raid the demon camp and free the prisoners. Kyle saluted Assassin with his bloody maul and then slid behind a tree. A patrol of demons ran past them, and then were blown apart by rifle-fire. The war-horns at the camp sounded, and the forty or so demons and their converts, dark humans with nothing to live for, drew their arms. They ran to battle with abandon, hungry for blood and death. The first to die was a human woman, with wild eyes and self-sharpened teeth. A rifle round tore apart what had once been beautiful blue eyes. "Move move move!" Roared a Shadow Clan GSGT before firing a few rounds into a glabrezu's chest. Kyle and Assassin joined the fray, fighting to save whatever and whoever they could on their cross-country trek to Armok. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kayla was in bad shape. She was still bleeding profusely every couple of hours, and Mike was not doing well either. He seemed to be ill by association, and losing the love of his life was doing nothing to aid that. The only good news that they had heard in days was that the remnants of the military had relinquished command on Presidential order to the Shadow Clan forces that had found themselves on the planet after saving D.C. from the largest of the demonic incursion. They were headed there, but a detour would soon be necessary if Kayla was going to survive. Up ahead, Hikari gestured for everyone to stop. AFR hefted his huge axe. They were a few miles away from Philadelphia, a city occupied by the demonic forces. Many of the soldiers they had spoken to said that Philadelphia was the staging ground for most of the demonic raids and excursions on the east coast. That said, the four were on high alert, ready for anything. Anything, including two cambions walking around the corner dragging a small child kicking and screaming. They were discussing ways to fillet the meat, and the best way to remove it from the bone. The first never saw Hikari coming. Grey, astral energy wrapped around her fists as she ripped the creature's throat out. As she tried to run past to turn around, the second cambion hamstrung her and raised it's sword for the kill-blow. AFR's huge axe slammed into the creature, throwing it over the small hill it had climbed over. It rolled and bounced down about twenty feet... landing at the edge of a massive encampment of one of the dozens of legions under Asmodeus' command. Several hundred demons watched the creature, and saw AFR peek over the edge... before dropping back down mouthing terrible phrases. A communal roar shook the very ground Hikari and the others stood upon. "We have two options. Come to me." Hikari said, "I can teleport us and pray we get somewhere safe, or we can be butchered and eaten. I choose for us all." Shadows wrapped around the four of them, and they faded from view right as the first demons came over the hill. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The pit fiend slammed a fist into the tree, then a second. It cracked, and then snapped before falling with a huge crash. Garrett had rolled clear, but was shaken pretty badly. Another of the creature's eyes were ruined, but it was being smart now, and protecting itself far better than it had before. A few more hits and Garrett would be gone. His leg stung, and a shard of wood stuck from his thigh from where he had impacted a tree traveling at high velocity. "Maggggot. I will crack your bones and suck your marrow." Rumbled the massive fiend, leaning forward and drawing it's weapons once more. "I will cut you, smash you, drink your blood and eat you." Garrett chuckled. He had seen worse in Afghanistan, but nothing quite so big. Then, before he could react, a huge boulder flew his way after being pulled free from the earth almost effortlessly. He closed his eyes and fired shot after shot, hoping to maximize the damage wrought by the rifle before he was splattered... and when the clip went empty, he blinked in confusion. He opened his eyes, and saw a tree illuminated in crimson energy hovering about an inch away from him. He blinked, and then the tree dropped, knocking him to his knees. A strange but beautiful woman was standing in the clearing, visibly exhausted from the display. Reddish flames trickled from her fingers to the ground, as if she had stopped the tree with some sort of energy. Then Garrett realized... that was Rose. And the pit fiend was looking at her, hungrily. The creature swung a knife at her, and a red bubble stopped the blade... and cracked. She dropped to one knee with a cry, and then the creature swatted her aside. She hit a tree with a crack and cried out, before falling limp. Garrett scowled. "Hey, you God-fearing piece of shit," He yelled, throwing the gun aside. "You want to play, mother fucker? Lets play, goddamn." The demon laughed, and crouched low, arms spread like X. He beckoned Garrett, and looked surprised when Garrett came. The demon slammed a fist into the ground, spraying dirt, but missed. As Garrett slid around it, he slammed a combat knife into the armpit up into the elbow, disabling the arm. The demon roared, and spun around, but Garrett was already gone. He slid the dagger Armok had given him along the creature's armored leg, and it parted the steel and tendon like butter, hamstringing the beast. It landed on two knuckles and a knee, the third swatting at Garrett. Three claws clipped his shoulders, tearing off some armor and flesh, but he only laughed. The demon growled and whimpered, then howled when a second combat knife stuck in it's back. Garrett pulled himself up and wrapped his arm around the beasts' neck. Before it could claw at him, he stuck the obsidian knife in an eye, then the throat, and then the side of the head, rolling aside before the creature fell, gurgling blood. Garrett staggered over to Rose and crouched beside her. He knelt beside her and checked her wounds. Nothing serious, just a busted head and some serious back-pain. He nodded, content... and fell over, in shock. The white of his bone could be seen on his shoulder, with two furrows taken out of it. Armok made it to the clearing about the same time the soldier Garrett had saved did. The soldier had brought ten others and Corinne, and Corinne rushed over to Garrett, pulling his head into her lap as she tried not to cry. Armok walked over to Rose and gently lifted her in his arms. He saw the pitfiend, and the tree, and deducted what had happened. He smiled at Rose in pride, then looked at Garrett. "Get that boy a medic, by the Darkness!" Armok roared, "He just killed Dread Lord Kerexus!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The doctor smiled at his clipboard and nodded his head. Katie was still screaming, screaming hysterically, actually. She had watched her entire family die, or be aided in that process, and then torn apart to be eaten. She had even been force-fed parts of a few relatives. The test was well underway. The doctor looked at the vial of hellfire. Liquid hatred, the power of destruction in a crystal vial the size of his forearm. That was going to be injected into Katie's heart. And if it didn't kill her, Asmodeus was going to obtain the secret of mass-producing demonic war machines. Currently, only the doctor knew the secret, waiting to use it to curry favor with the general. He nearly drooled in anticipation of the countries and exotic boys he would be given in return... boys to experiment upon, and used to harness the powers of hell. He walked over to Katie and ran a hand up her leg... then slid it back down, his nails drawing blood. She didn't even notice. A few minutes later, however, she did notice the needle ramming into her heart, and seconds later, the agony was so intense her body forgot to shut-down or blackout. *****AUTHOR'S NOTE***** Dread Lord Kerexus is a general of one of Asmodeus' legions. Currently, there are thirteen Legions, divided each into four Talons. A Legion is 666,666 soldiers, which, however cliche', is quite a few soldiers.

These children that come at you with knives, they are your children. You taught them. I didn't teach them. I just tried to help them stand up. -Charles Manson
==============================================
Katie groaned, rolling over wherever she was. The dark, damp stench of human wastes and wet earth surrounded her, as well as the sickly sweet smell of rotting flesh. A low growl rumbled from something either close to her or echoing from far away. Her hand slid through wet, viscous goo that she prayed was old drool... and then she blinked. Her vision had adjusted, and she could see her surroundings, including the huge, humanoid demon that was eying her hungrily.
"What the fuck do you want?" Katie growled, rising on shaky knees.
The demon laughed, then leaped towards her, claws extended. Suddenly, Katie's hand seemed to move of it's own volition, and the air around her seemed to gain heat, rapidly. She blinked in shock as white-hot claws seemed to form from where her fingers had been, and the demon seemed even more surprised when she slashed several chunks of flesh from it's chest. It rolled past her, whimpering, glaring at her from the corner of the pit they shared.
"... Oh damn." She whispered, looking at her hands in awe. Claws had replaced her fingers, and she knew without looking that fangs were hungry for demon blood and flesh, and that something was changing all over her body.
She crouched low, newly formed muscles rippling, and then leapt into action. First, she slid her left claws into it's chest as easy as a hot knife slides into butter, then she ripped her right claws through the creature's throat. She spun, tearing her claws from the creature's chest, and then screamed in rage. Dark energy rippled around her, and flakes of something fell from far above her, landing on the ground lazily. She looked around for the Doctor that had done this to her... that had killed her family. The angrier she got, the hotter the air around her seemed to grow. A spot on the wall seemed to ripple... then melt. Katie bared her fangs, and attacked the wall savagely.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike stumbled backwards over the corpse of some sort of demon, and then held his hands up when several soldiers pointed guns at his head and chest. Severs growled and rose to his knees, bracing himself on his axe. The teleportation had been rough, and a hell of a bumpy ride as the shadows themselves seemed to seethe in fury at the dischord and unbalance of this world. Hikari was on the ground, writhing in a silent seizure. Beside her...
"Kayla!" Mike screamed, ignoring the soldiers to cradle his fiance in his arms. She was laying in a pool of her own blood, as if the shadow teleportation had ripped her wound open anew. She opened her eyes slowly and looked at Mike with a faint smile. She raised her hand haltingly to cup his cheek, and then shivered. Her hand fell limp to the ground, and her head rolled to the side, landing in her own blood.
Some of the soldiers gathered lower or holster their weapons, looking around for whoever was in charge. A younger girl walked over... and dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around the hysterical Mike. Katey held him while he sobbed, her own eyes sealed tight. About that time, Armok stepped back into the clearing with Rose, and he set her down beside a few medics before walking to where Hikari lay writhing. He frowned.
"The darkness of your world is less tame than the one from which we come from. Interesting..." He said, then gestured at Hikari. He mumbled a few words in a language lost to mankind for millions of years... and she stopped her writhing. Her purple eyes opened, then focused on Armok.
"H-hey, asshole." Hikari whispered, smiling as her eyes closed.
Armok chuckled, and gestured for a medic. As he turned, he realized that the man huddled next to Kayla wasn't a soldier, but was a civilian... and then he realized just who they were. Katey and Mike... and a very dead Kayla. His eyes closed and his throat tightened in sorrow, but all good general's knew. If one stopped to mourn the loss of his men, then all initiative would be lost, and everything would be in vain. He saluted the fallen woman, and gestured for a medic to come and offer whatever aid he could.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kyle looked at Assassin then nodded. A few demons had walked past them on patrol, oblivious to their presence. The demons had chosen to make a base out of a Suzuki dealership, and arrogantly assumed that they had no reason to fear a few humans with guns and attitudes. Kyle growled, then rolled around the pillar he had been hiding behind. A demon's mace shattered against the skull of a belrezu. Assassin dismembered another demon, and then the sharpshooters opened fire. The patrol rapidly became nothing more than corpses, and Kyle and Assassin slipped further into the wreckage of what was once millions of dollars of motorcycles.
"Watch yourself." Said Assassin, slipping under some flaming debris and out of sight.
Moments later, and a few corpses, the rumble of two Suzuki motorcycle engines mixed with demonic shouts of outrage and fury. Kyle and Assassin flew past running demons, whom were seconds latter splattered by the military convoy that they had rescued from the outlying suburbs. They were headed towards the eastern exit of the city, hopefully towards Armok and whatever other members of the Clan had gathered.
